Meet the HeliSmart Team

The team at Helismart are led by seasoned experts who have extensive industry experience and know exactly what it takes to supply top quality services. Our primary focus is scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, rebuilds, overhauls and repairs. We aim to provide the quickest turnaround time possible while always taking into account all safety aspects.

Our specialty lay with the Robinson product. Chief engineer Andrew Leach has almost 20 years’ engineering experience and has completed factory training at Robinson’s main base in California. Helismart are also CASA approved to carry out light turbine maintenance and our turbine clientele are fast growing.

Andrew has extensive industry experience with almost 20 years working on Robinson Helicopters. He completed his apprenticeship with Cloncurry Mustering, which is where his passion for helicopters began. Andrew then furthered his career at Aeropower in Redcliffe and then moved onto becoming Chief Engineer for HeliMuster (NT) at Victoria River Downs Station before making the move to Dalby to open Helismart in 2017. Accompanying his factory training with Robinson, Andrew is also Lycoming Factory trained. His wealth of knowledge in engineering has been pivotal for the company and he finds no job too big or too small when it comes to servicing your helicopter.

HELISMART DIRECTOR AND PILOT

With 35 years’ experience in the aviation industry as a pilot, Ben brings both flying and business experience to the Helismart partnership. Ben spent 5 years as a helicopter mustering pilot for Cloncurry Mustering in his younger years, which is where he and Andrew first met. Making the change over into fixed wing aerial agricultural aircraft in 2000, Ben now also owns and runs a successful aerial agricultural business, Smart Air Services. Ben has always had a passion for helicopters and knows first-hand the importance of limiting down time while ensuring your maintenance is done to the highest safety and engineering standards.

People, Culture & Business Support

With over 20 years’ experience in business, administration, human resources, and logistics, Steph supports the business management and growth of Helismart. Raised on a cattle station near Cloncurry, Steph has been a country girl from day one and is no stranger to the world of aviation. She first kicked off her career path working for a passenger aviation charter company in the late 90s and then went on to complete further studies, travel and work in a range of administrative roles (in and out) of aviation. Alongside her husband Ben, Steph is now a part owner of both Helismart and Smart Air Services. She works mostly behind the scenes of Helismart and is dedicated to supporting her staff while working towards the growth and future of the company.

Barry Ballantyne

LAME/Operations Manager

Born in Zimbabwe and later moving to Australia, Barry first embarked on his aviation career at Aeropower in Redcliffe over 13 years ago. This is also where he first met Andrew. After completing his apprenticeship, Barry went on to work on a wide range of helicopters in a diverse set of locations in both Australia and overseas. He came to Helismart as a well-seasoned professional and soon took on the role of operations management. In this role, Barry controls the day-to-day schedule of the company and manages the team on the floor to ensure clients are seen to as quickly as possible. He is driven to improve safety and professionalism within aircraft maintenance and is eager to pass on the knowledge he has to up and coming engineers.
